WHITKIRK BULLDOGS (9) V CHEQUERFIELD RANGERS.(8)
This was always going to be a close affair between the top two teams in the competition, with Whitkirk grinding it out to the final whistle to come away with the important points.
Both teams came out of the blocks fast with the game been played at a ferocious pace, with some crunching defence early on. Both teams forwards were setting the platform, neither team backing down. This went on till the 11th minute when a good passage of play down the centre of the field by the Rangers resulted in a try for Josh Cooper, conversion missed. From the kick off, it turned straight back in to the forwards arm wrestle with the Whitkirk second row Matty Grosvenor busting holes in the Rangers defence, still the Bulldogs could not get over the line.Chequerfield played out of there own twenty and on the back of a couple of dubious decisions by the man in the middle, Dave Asquith were up in the Whitkirk half again. A smart move from the Rangers halfbacks, put in Daniel Johnson out wide, conversion missed. Whitkirk needed to pull something out of the bag before the game started slipping away from them, and just before half time that is what they did. From the scrum forty out from the Rangers line, a neat set of passes from the Bulldogs stand off Will Ford sent centre Alex Gomersan bursting through the Rangers line to score, conversion added by Daniel Leafe. Half time.....
At the start of the second half the Bulldogs picked up where they left off with the forwards starting to dominate and were looking like a team brimming with confidence. The referee gave a few decisions against the Rangers which looked like they could have gone either way but gave Whitkirk good ball time which they needed, still the Rangers defence stood tall and Whitkirk could not turn the possession in to points. After a spell deep in to the second half were the Bulldogs forced a goal line drop out which was put out into touch on the full. Whitkirk opted for the penalty which full back Daniel Leafe coolly slotted over, game even 8-8 with three minutes to go. From the kick off things were tense in the Whitkirk half with bulldogs forwards Matty Grosvenor and Jacob Mahoney making good yards. On the fourth, from thirty yards out the ball was shipped back to Daniel leafe who slotted the drop kick in between the sticks, to claim the win for the bulldogs! This makes for an interesting clash at the end of the season at chequerfield, but on this day Whitkirk came out on top.
